Tree I am was designed and created for a indoor atrium for a contemporary home in Ontario. Inspired by the couple’s love of nature, travel, sports, I chose to reflect their spirit in a tree. Close up photos show that the 4 seasons are represented, noted by the heaviest use of floral forms for Summer, buds and numerous leaves for Spring, one maple leaf for Autumn and the simple branches for Winter. One orange small handblown glass (made by glassblowers in Revelstoke, B.C) has creeped its way via its vine into winter. Five more handblown glass flowers fill the larger circle supported by two cast iron hands. In the large circle we see waves symbolic of water as the flowers dance above in the sky. The tree trunk twists, like a speedy down hill ski run. One by one, rods of steel were bent and welded, supported by an inner steel armature, to create the rugged surface of the trunk. The roots and branches are inspired by the beauty of real trees but also laced with my passion for movement, dance and the whimsey of animation and humour.
